Lock & Key 2009 Shiraz was selected in the Top 20 Reds under $20
Lock & Key 2010 Riesling just missed the cut but was mentioned among those "most unlucky". The Riesling scored 94pts - an outstanding score for a sub-$15 wine.

-----------------  GOLD, GOLD, GOLD SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL -----------------

Moppity Vineyards has come away from the 2011 Sydney International Wine Competition with an impressive haul of three gold medals. This is an outstanding follow-on from the 2010 Sydney International, where the 2008 Reserve Shiraz was awarded Trophy for Best Medium Bodied Dry Red. This year's results are:

2008 Reserve Shiraz: gold, Top 100
2009 Reserve Shiraz: Blue Gold
2009 Estate Shiraz: Blue Gold

It's not over yet. The 2008 Reserve Shiraz is short-listed for trophy once again. The trophy winners are announced in the new year so we'll keep our fingers crossed until then.

-----------------  FEATURE STORY ON MOPPITY VINEYARDS -----------------

Angus Hughson wrote a terrific piece on the rise of Moppity Vineyards. Here's a little of what he had to say:

"The ability not only to survive but to thrive in hard times takes vision and true grit"

"The Lock & Key wines, priced about S15, show by their swag of trophies and gold medals that they are exceptional wines; they provide excellent value with robust and complex fruit characters coupled with regional complexity."

"It is difficult to make a splash in a country in which shiraz is found in almost every region. But the value and sheer quality of Hilltops wines suggest the area may soon be considered in the top tier of Australian shiraz-producing regions."

-----------------  INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS  -----------------

The most recent vintage of our signature wine, the 2009 Reserve Shiraz just won gold at the prestigious 2010 New Zealand International Wine Competition.  The 2009 is the fourth vintage of the Reserve Shiraz and each has now won a major award at an International show. Release is scheduled for September 2011.

-----------------  DAVID BEATS GOLIATH  -----------------

The newly released 2009 Lock & Key Shiraz was awarded Trophy for Champion Shiraz of the Show at the 2010 Riverina Wine Show. Although the show is a national show, open to entries from around Australia, it is a particular favourite of some of the largest and mightiest winemakers in the country.

-----------------  SUCCESS AT SMALL VIGNERON'S AWARDS  -----------------

The newly released 2010 Lock & Key Riesling was awarded Trophy for Best Riesling of the Show at the 2010 Winewise Small Vigneron's Awards. Judging was undertaken by one of Australia's most experienced panels, headed by James Halliday. Retailing at under $15, this must truly be one of Australia's great white wine bargains. See the rest of the range here.

In addition, we won:
Gold (best in class) 2009 Reserve Shiraz
Gold 2009 Lock & Key Shiraz
Silver 2008 Lock & Key Shiraz
Silver 2009 Lock & Key Merlot
...plus a number of other silver and bronze medals

We dominated the shiraz class, winning 4 of the top 5 awards and were narrowly pipped for Most Successful Exhibitor.

-----------------  BIG RED WINE BOOK 2010/11  -----------------

Moppity features prominently, with 3 wines in the "Top 100 under $20" and the '08 Reserve Shiraz given a cracking 95pt review, putting it up with the best wines of the year. Over 1,000 of Australia's best wines went under the microscope of Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh.

Quality
2008 Reserve Shiraz 95pts:

o   “It’s at the most concentrated end of the cool-climate shiraz spectrum… everything about it spells low yields, careful growing and careful winemaking… it belongs beside the finest meals.”

Value
3 wines listed in the “Top 100 under $20”:

  • 2008 Estate Shiraz 91pts “a plush wine with assorted spices embedded in the rich, plum-sauce drive of flavour.” “Authors Choice” award

  • 2008 Estate Cabernet 91pts “…it displays oodles of class and character... Really good clobber.”

  • 2008 Lock & Key Shiraz 90pts “We’d have no hesitation in buying this” “Authors Choice” award

Rating scale
91-94 “Excellent. Better than excellent. Hunt out a good price and buy up.”
95-100 “Exceptional. Money is the only deterrent to filling up our houses with it. Fit for special occasions.”

-----------------  TRIUMPH - SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL  -----------------

The Moppity Vineyards 2008 Reserve Shiraz has just been crowned Best Medium Bodied Dry Red at the prestigious Sydney International Wine Competition. All three releases of this, our flagship wine, have now won major awards at Australian and international shows.

-----------------  STOP PRESS - JIMMY WATSON -----------------

In what could be a pivotal event for the region, the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy was this year awarded to a Hilltops wine. This is only the second time that the trophy has been awarded to a wine from NSW since 1962. The big news for us is that the fruit was substantially sourced from Moppity Vineyards and the wine was made by the same winemaker that made the 2009 Moppity Vineyards wines.
